Heliamphora heterodoxa × minor — Sun Pitcher Plant
Heliamphora heterodoxa × minor is a beautiful hybrid Sun Pitcher Plant, prized by carnivorous plant collectors for its elegant upright pitchers and subtle colouring. Native Heliamphora species grow high in the cloud-covered tepui mountains of South America, and this hybrid combines the vigour of H. heterodoxa with the compact form of H. minor. The result is a striking plant with slender green pitchers often blushed with red, each topped with a tiny “nectar spoon” that helps lure insects inside.
Rather than closing traps, these pitchers collect rainwater where insects eventually break down, providing nutrients for the plant. With the right conditions, it slowly forms a clump of sculptural pitchers that look incredible in a bright indoor growing space or specialist setup.
Light
Very bright light is essential. A sunny windowsill with several hours of direct sun or strong grow lights will help the plant colour up and produce healthy pitchers.
Watering
These like drier conditions than most carnivorous plants. The pot can sit in a shallow tray of water, but avoid deep or stagnant water, and leave with no water for short periods. As with all carnivorous plants, avoid tap water where possible.
Temperature
Prefers cooler conditions than many tropical carnivorous plants. Ideally kept between 15–25°C with good airflow and some humidity.
Potting
Use a nutrient-poor carnivorous plant mix such as sphagnum moss with added perlite. Avoid regular houseplant compost and never fertilise.
Hot Tips
Heliamphora enjoy bright light, high humidity, and fresh airflow. If the pitchers start forming smaller or lose colour, it usually means the plant would appreciate stronger light. Over time it can slowly divide to form a clump.
Pet Safety
Not considered toxic to pets, though the pitchers are delicate and best kept out of reach.
