This petite variety draws its name from the Latin term for ‘blunt,’ describing the shape of the tips of its unique leaves. Sporting a bright lime green coloration with translucent ‘windows’ atop each leaf, Haworthia cymbiformis v. obtusa will reach a mature height of only 4-6 inches in diameter, making it a perfect addition to the front border of succulent arrangements or temperate rock gardens. Rather than forming conventional rosettes, the densely packed and very fleshy leaves grow into a rounded mound as the plant develops, lending an even more atypical aesthetic to this eye-catching variety.
Like most Haworthia, this variety is also tolerant of indirect light to partial shade, making it an ideal specimen for indoor growing. Take heed, however, not to overwater Haworthia cymbiformis v. obtusa, as its thick leaves already contain a substantial volume of water for the roots to draw from. To facilitate the drier conditions that it prefers, be sure to utilize a porous soil mixture, a well-draining pot, and a thorough but infrequent watering routine. Beyond these simple needs, this hardy succulent is known to flourish at the hands of even beginner succulent gardeners, so do not fret excessively about the care of this stunning variety.
During the cold winter months, take steps to protect the leaves of Haworthia cymbiformis v. obtusa from freezing temperatures – and soon thereafter white blooms with rusty pink veins will rise above the rosettes on tall flower stalks during the spring and summer months.
